Hooked Fish and Chips is a straightforward takeaway spot in Thornhill, Southampton, known mainly for its classic fish and chips and a no-frills neighborhood atmosphere. Located on Thornhill Park Road, it attracts locals looking for a reliable, freshly cooked meal without the fuss of a dine-in experience.

The takeaway focuses on doing the basics well: fresh cod with crispy batter, chips cooked to order, and a decent range of traditional sides like sausages and cheesy or salt & chilli chips. The portions are generous, making it a solid option for families or anyone after a familiar, comforting British takeaway.

Customers seem to appreciate how the chips here avoid the overcooked or soggy pitfalls common in many chippies. Regulars mention that the fish batter manages to strike a good balance between light and crunchy, which speaks to consistent kitchen technique. A nice touch is the use of paper separators between fish and chips, a small detail that adds a bit of practical care to the packaging.

The service experience can vary. Some visitors note friendly interactions from younger staff, particularly a young woman praised for her warm and engaging manner, which adds a friendly, welcoming layer to the otherwise busy and efficient service. However, others have found the atmosphere a bit brisk, with little chit-chat beyond taking orders. This suggests that while the food is a highlight, the place leans more towards practical takeaway than a social hangout.

Hooked Fish and Chips fits well into the local routine of Thornhill residents who want quick, traditional fish and chips without traveling further afield. It’s best visited during early evenings or weekends when the kitchen is busy but not overwhelmed — that’s when the chips are freshest and the service tends to be at its friendliest. Families, couples, and anyone after a straightforward, nostalgic takeaway meal will find what they’re looking for here.

OK. Our usual F&C shop was closed, so we went to Hooked F&C, which gave us the opportunity for a nearby comparison. We had two large Cod @ £7.85 each and a large Chips @ £4.65. Hooked has obviously changed ownership and branding. The owners were clearly busy but offerd no banter or interaction with the customers and neither did the rest of the staff other than taking and giving the customer orders=4* Branding was also minimal & only just effective =2* So to the fish on the positive side, the fish tasted lovely, as was the batter. The negative is it was overpriced, and though it looked a good size, the weight showed it was 25 to 30% less in weight compared to our usual F&C shop. Now the chips They were lovely A nicely cooked & flavoursome chip. BUT at £4.65 for a large compared to £4.00 for a Medium at our usual, the large was also half the size in weight to the medium portion we usually buy. So would we go back? Well, Hooked F&C isn't the worst in Southampton by far, but its over priced for what you actually get on your plate. So we would actually award Hooked F&C 3.5*

I am a regular customer In this chippy In Thornhill. Customer service Is always the best. A young lady around the age of 17 who I believe Is named Lacy (Appology If my spelling Is Inaccurate) greets me and my family with a warming happy smile and always engages In conversation too which definitely brings up the atmosphere. Food Is incredible too - crispy batter and fresh fish. Definitely reccomended to others If in the area.

We've moved to the area from Reading, where there, chippies primarily sell fried chicken, no pork sausages and hot light chips - which is sacrilege. This is the best chippy my partner and I have ever had. Chips are ALWAYS fresh - they do not do hot light chips. They sell scraps (we haven't seen this in years!). And they they even add a bit of paper to seperate the fish and the chips, which, these small little touches show pride in what they serve. Which is so refreshing for us! So glad to have them as our local chippy.

They serve the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. The chips are perfect shape and taste and the fish is beautifully cooked with alight and crispy batter

Thought Id take a minute too write up a review about a lovely little blonde girl who works In this chip shop named Laci. Tonight me and my family branched out from our local takeaway and Its more then safe to say we will be back here. Not only was our food incredible but customer service from this kind-hearted young lady was incredible, such a friendly face and smile. This young girl definitely deserves some praise and I hope my message puts her forward to receive the treatment she deserves.

I absolutely love Hooked and cannot go to any other Chip Shop now. I order the same thing every time. Chips and chicken nuggets with curry and sweet chilli sauce! Highly recommend!
